Yoel Romero Facts
- A champion freestyle wrestler in the 1990s and early 2000s, Yoel had competed infrequently after 2005. He was suspended for the entirety of 2006 by the Cuban Wrestling Federation for allegedly throwing a match at the 2005 World Wrestling Championships.
- Owing to this, after winning the Grand Prix of Germany in 2007, he chose not to return to Cuba and stayed on in Germany. He had later joined the Ringer-Bundesliga, a professional German wrestling league where teams compete for titles. He was a starting member as well as a mentor/coach for the SV Johannis Nuremberg team.
- After a while, he began his transformation into mixed martial arts and had made his professional debut in December 2009. Over the next 3 years, he had amassed a win-loss record of 5–0 across various promotions in Germany and Poland.
- In the 2nd of those bouts, he had recorded a 62-second finish via TKO. In 2011, he had won the last 3 of those fights via TKO in the 1st round. In July 2011, he had signed up with the now-defunct MMA/kickboxing organization Strikeforce.
