Derek Brunson is an American professional mixed martial artist who began competing in the middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in 2012.   1. Derek was a competitive cheerleader and also a wrestler in his high school days, and had earned college scholarships in both those disciplines. He had chosen to take up the wrestling scholarship.
  2. During his college career, he had competed in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II Championships between 2003 and 2005 and had accumulated a 6-7 win-loss record. He was an NCAA Division II ‘All-American’ in both 2003 and 2005. He had transitioned to mixed martial arts only after he had finished college.
  3. He had made his professional mixed martial arts debut in May 2010 and had defeated his opponent by a rear-naked choke in just 52 seconds. He went on to win his next 5 fights and none of those bouts had gone past the 2:30 minutes mark of the first round. His unbeaten record only came to an end in his 10th bout.
  4. In late 2012, he was accepted to compete in The Ultimate Fighter 17, an installment of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)-produced reality TV series The Ultimate Fighter. However, on the very first day of filming, he was removed from the competition as he had not yet been released from his previous contract by Sho Fight. After clearing out that legal issue, he had eventually made his UFC debut in December 2012.
  5. His alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, had named him their ‘Young Alumnus of the Year’ in 2014. In 2016, the institution had inducted him into their ‘Athletics Hall of Fame’.
  6. As of September 2021, he had won 3 UFC Bonus Awards – ‘Fight of the Night’ (twice), and ‘Performance of the Night’ (once).
